    I’ve got to hand it to the New York Times on this one.

    Here is a pitch-perfect send-up of a convention of academic writing I loathe: the plodding method whereby writers make such pronouncements as “In this essay I will show . . .” Please, just show it—don’t tell me you’re going to show it later!
