While mixed sex college dorm rooms are unfortunately nothing truly new, part of the justification for UCLA's consideration is remarkable.

The school's Office of Residential Life reports they are considering honoring the requests of transgender students, "to live with a student of the gender to which they are transitioning".

When the youthful desire to be openminded and tolerant confronts this unusual reality, how exactly does the non-transitioning student bow out without incurring social or perhaps even legal backlash? Is this a position the school (or parents) think appropriate for a nineteen year old to be in?
